Learn About This Rare Heritage Barley From the Middle East
Palouse Heritage Purple Egyptian® barley spread northward from the Middle East centuries ago to the arid regions east northeast of the Caspian Sea. The bran layer of this six-row hulless grain is glassy purplish-black and composed of the antioxidant anthocyanin and high beta-glucans that lower cholesterol. Palouse pioneering sisters Mary and Anna Barth (Bart) were raised on the Russian steppes and recalled camel rides along fields of this beautiful grain.
Palouse Heritage Purple Egyptian® is prized for its mellow, nutty flavor with subtle coffee undertones. It shines in soups, grain bowls, pancakes, muffins, flatbreads—even brownies—and is especially renowned for producing exceptional malt.
